New Book: a Study of Fictional American Presidents as Film Characters
Authors offer a complete filmography of fictional presidential films since 1930
BROCKPORT, N.Y. – (Release Date TBD) – Hollywood's manner of making films, its conventions, applies especially to fictional presidential films, allowing filmmakers to express their ideas that could not be done in traditional historical films. In Fictional Presidential Films, Sarah Miles Bolam and Thomas J. Bolam collaborate to offer a complete filmography of these 200-plus films since 1930.
Since the beginning of the film industry, the president of the United States has been one of the favorite characters used by the industry. In their first book titled The Presidents on Film (2007), the authors discussed 407 films featuring actors who portrayed 40 real presidents. Meanwhile, Fictional Presidential Films identifies 230 commercial theatrical films that have been released with a fictional president of the United States as a character.
The main body of the work provides a brief summary of each decade along with a summary on the overall nature of films in which a fictional president appeared. Each relevant film is then discussed with credits, plot summary, description of the presidential appearance and, when possible, an assessment of the presidential portrayal included.
Lucid and informative, Fictional Presidential Films describes the adaptation of real life to filmed political figures, the presidents.
