ANNOUNCING : The publication of local book…
Rochester Eats: 75 Years of Faves & Craves
BY DEMOCRAT & CHRONICLE RESTAURANT CRITIC, KAREN DEYLE
Published by Patti Ronsvalle, Big Kids Publishing Foreword by: Rochester Native/Nationally Respected Chef & Chicago Restaurateur, Rick Tromanto
Photos by John C. Buck, Buck & Pulleyn
75 Years of Rochester Food Memories
Remember when dining out in Rochester was a special occasion? Before there were national chains, there were family-owned eateries with a special character all their own. People dressed up for dinner, and depending on the decade, that might have meant trousers with suspenders and hat and gloves, or three piece suits and quiana disco dresses.
Rochester Eats By Karen Deyle, the latest publication from Big Kids Productions & Publishing will visit those old favorites through menus, photos, artifacts, recipes personal recollections and some very amusing behind-the-scenes tidbits. Reaching back over the last 75 years, as long as most of us will remember, it is more of a nostalgic fun trip than historical. The book gives a place of honor to the venues of the past before their memories are gone for good.
We will dress for dinner and make a reservation at places like
Eddie’s Chop House, The Dickens, The Manhattan, Odenbach’s Peacock Room, The Changing Scene, Edwards, Town & Country Dinner Theatre, and Rio Bamba.
We will gather our families and friends and head to more casual venues like
Red Creek, the Cathay Pagoda, Uncle John’s Pancake house and the Aloha.
We will feed late night cravings and summer snack attacks with fast food memories from
Nick Tahou’s, Don & Bobs, Vic & Irvs, Schallers, Tom Wahl’s and Arrows Drive-In.
For dessert we’ll pick up string-tied white boxes of baked goods
from Savoia, Wocjak, Gruttadaria, and the department store bakeries; Sibley’s and McCurdy’s.
In the same sweet vein, we will stop for an ice cream at Abbotts, Gelato, Bill Wahls, Century Sweet Shop, Maggs, McConnell’s and others.
Finally, as Rochester is once again becoming known as a food company city, we will look at some of the pioneering food manufacturers, like:
French’s Mustard, Ragu Spaghetti Sauce, Zweigles, Fee Flavorings and Tobin’s First Prize Hots.
So pull up a chair, tuck in your napkin, pick up your fork and savor a bite of Rochester history.
Book Launch is set for October 17, 2007 (Press/Media invitation to follow).
Publisher is soliciting Rochesterians for classic restaurant memories, memorabilia and photos
