Japanese Restaurants

Plum House Japanese.  686 Monroe Ave., Rochester, NY 14607.  442-0778.

This restaurant should not be confused with the Plum Garden restaurant on Monroe Ave. in Pittsford.  This restaurant is superior in nearly every way.

The Plum House Japanese restaurant on Monroe Ave. is a favorite lunch destination for downtown business people and neighborhood professionals.  Rochester, NY is small enough of a town that restaurant patrons look up see if they recognize arriving patrons.  At the Plum House Japanese people seem to be greeting each other all of the time.

The service is excellent.  The food is well prepared and reasonably priced.  The atmosphere is casual, relaxed, and friendly.  Even during busy lunch periods patrons are never rushed.  Like at Tokyo Japanese Restaurant, I always feel like an honored guest.  The sushi is the best I've had in Rochester.  They have nice combination lunches at reasonable prices.

Tokyo Japanese Restaurant. 2930 W. Henrietta Rd., Rochester, NY 14623. 424-4166.

Tokyo is an island of bliss in a sea of cars and strip malls. No other restaurant in Rochester has a more calming effect on me.  It is located on an ugly busy corner in an unattractive building at the corner of West Henrietta Road and Brighten Henrietta Townline road. There is nothing in its appearance or location that would attract the uninitiated. Inside, Tokyo is reminiscent of the tranquility of a traditional Japanese garden. The staff is wonderfully attentive. You will usually be greeted at the door as though you are an honored guest.  After being seated at table, your server will deliver hot steamed towels to your table so that you can cleanse your hands.  This is such a pleasant and refreshing experience that I am surprised that it hasn't caught on in other restaurants.  If you go at lunch time, you will experience reverse sticker shock.  The lunch prices at Tokyo, especially their specials, are incredibly low.  And as you will see later, quite a bargain.  My favorite lunch special is Salmon Bento.  This special includes a small bowl of Miso Soup followed by a covered lacquered Bento box containing tasty cooked salmon, a few pieces of vegetable tempura, a small salad, and condiments.  The sushi is very good and a favorite with Japanese locals.  The service is never rushed and always courteous.  When life becomes hectic and pressured, I take lunch at Tokyo, and feel wonderfully refreshed and relaxed afterward.
